Platformer Progress - Visualization Continues, Character Design and In-Between Sprite Frame WIPs

Eyo to you all once more, as was mentioned last week, I had the idea of going between character designing unique wise akin to Crash Bandicoot, Skullmonkeys, Spyro and likewise, or mechanics for 1 piloting character wise like Sonic for what could work as templates for when I test boss work.


Well to start this post off I went further into the unique character route, as last week I showed everyone the mouse lad, Dominique. This time it's 2 more sketches of characters.

For reminders sake, this was Dom's sketch:

Little mouse lad, brandishing an iron mask and a collar that speaks for him. black/gray-white-red colors being the initial triad of colors for him,

Similar to Ashra being black-orange-white primary colored, red being a common color.


I wanted my theme to be along the lines of a more emphasized "wider, diverse designs from eachother like they come from different paths" idea.


So in idea, Ashra keeps to a more modern scientist kinda idea,

Dom here being futuristic almost, yet with a shackled feeling to him,


Well I got 2 more to maybe think about, the first I'm calling Valentine.

In idea here it's playing to a silhouette that allows more freedom in wiggly fluid shaping, keeping the blackened colors inside, and a brighter outline, a walking visual black hole. This actually also side effect would make spriting Valentine a lot easier.


No idea if Valentine is meant to be a male or female character, so Valentine is a mystery because I don't want to think between the two and this makes it more interesting.


And the other concept was for a Hyena, to be the one member of the group closest to being comic relief, with visuals being a mix of metal band and circus, although he has no name yet.

The left-right I'm between using, one is body paint stripes, the other a coat with the stripes as a trim.. and I'm kinda leaning left for him.

Metal-Circus being the theme I hope he conveys with the mix of iron and stripes on his body. I likely will keep brown fur as the primary and have every other detail be black-white. The hair likely remaining red because it's like that for everyone else so far.


I can keep the same boss ideas like this, just have these lads having abilities that'd make em work the same way, so less to sprite overall in idea, will test that theory soon.


Alongside that, last thing, on the smaller end of the scale.. in multiple meanings, minor notice, and tiny fella, is Moof. Last week, I showed more sketching of his poses, including these two on the top right that'd be for his idle.

Now it's not a lot yet, BUT I am getting the body angles themselves while getting his arms and legs fully built up. Alongside that, I also got the in-between frame for Moof's jump, between going up, and falling.

It's not the most in the world, but I feel like I'm still getting it down, little bobbing motions for the equally little guy, Moof. Doesn't need to be the 100% smoothest sometimes, just good to convey motion, so the fall only really needs 2 frames in that regard.


Main thing to figure out with him still is idea of power-up visual indication for his extra hit, I'm still working on that alongside some.. coding issues, will cover while fixing it.


But for all that'll be it for me, I'll try to cover more when I get it done, but only time can really tell there, so until next time, that's all.
